Getting married through a religious ceremony is a moment of great emotional and spiritual significance. However, in addition to the personal aspect, certain bureaucratic requirements must be met to give civil validity to the union.

The law requires that religious marriages follow specific procedures to be recognized at a civil level. Therefore, it is essential to know the documents required and the procedures to follow.

Documentation Required for Religious Marriage:
To ensure that your wedding day goes smoothly, it is important to gather all the necessary documents in advance, both legal and strictly religious.

Legal Documents:

  • Self-certification at the Civil Status Office
  • Valid identity document
  • Revenue stamp

Religious Documents:

  • Baptism Certificate : can be requested in the parish of baptism, essential for Catholic marriage. If distance is an obstacle, it can be obtained online through the following link .
  • Confirmation Certificate : obtainable in the parish where you received Confirmation. This certificate can also be requested on our website at the following link .
  • Certificate of Ecclesiastical Free Status : required for those who have lived outside the diocese of marriage after the age of 16, to certify the absence of previous marriages.
  • Certificate of Attendance at the Premarital Course : an essential requirement that prepares for married life according to the values of the Church.
  • Ecclesiastical Nulla Osta : required by the Curia if the marriage is celebrated in a parish other than the one of belonging or outside the municipality of residence.

Procedure :
After collecting the above documents, proceed with the request for banns at the Town Hall and the parish of residence. The banns, which publicly announce the intention to marry, remain on display for eight days and are valid for six months. In the absence of impediments, you will obtain the nulla osta for the marriage.

Subsequently, before the wedding, a meeting is held with the parish priest, known as processetto, to discuss the intention and awareness of contracting marriage according to the Catholic rite. This is a fundamental moment of reflection.

Organizing a religious wedding requires dedication and attention to detail, but every step taken is an integral part of the journey that will unite you as husband and wife.
