Certificate of Citizenship

The certificate of citizenship certifies the Italian citizenship of a natural person.

The certificate of citizenship can only be requested for Italian citizens who are registered in the relevant registry office in the Municipality in which they are resident. Therefore, to request it, it is necessary to know the name, surname, date of birth and municipality of residence of the natural person.

What is the Citizenship certificate? Who does it concern? Who can request it?

The certificate of citizenship is a document that certifies the citizenship of Italians regularly registered in the registry office of the municipality of residence.

The Citizenship certificate can only be obtained if the citizen is resident in Italy.

They are Italian citizens:

• citizens born in Italy;
• foreign minors adopted by Italian parents;
• children born to an Italian father/mother;
• minors born to unknown parents in Italy if no other citizenship has been ascertained;
• foreign citizens who have obtained Italian citizenship (obtained by decree of the Minister of the Interior);
• spouses of Italian citizens who have been legally resident in Italy for at least six months or three years after the marriage (unless there has been an annulment/divorce/dissolution).

This certificate can be requested both by the person concerned and by third parties who intend to ascertain the Italian citizenship of a natural person.

The certificate of citizenship can be requested in any municipality in the national territory (e.g. request a certificate in the municipality of Rome, Milan, Palermo).

N.B. You cannot ask for a certificate of citizenship on deceased persons.

What does the certificate of citizenship contain? How long is it valid?

The requested document contains information about the natural person's Italian citizenship. In particular, the Certificate of Citizenship states:

• name;
• surname;
• date and place of birth,
• specific citizenship.

The time value of the certificate of citizenship is six months starting from the delivery of the certificate. After six months, the document is no longer valid and does not guarantee the truthfulness of the information contained therein. However, the interested party may extend its validity by declaring that the citizenship has not changed. In any case, a new certificate may be requested in the manner described below.

Only residents of Italian territory duly registered in the municipality of residence can obtain the certificate of citizenship.

The citizenship certificate has the function of making the rights deriving from Italian citizenship exercisable. It is necessary to fix the residence.

N.B. Citizenship certificates can be issued by the municipality with a stamp or without a stamp. In the case of stamp duty, the same is 16.00 euros + 0.26 for secretarial fees, in the event of no stamp duty, only 0.26 euros will be owed for secretarial fees.
